HiPo 289s

Post by Roger King »

Given the casting history of Ford 289 blocks, I'm increasingly confused: I know this has been argued over for decades for Mustangs, but I don't know the answer for Cobras and have not been able to find it easily. So - the 260 and early 289 blocks, including 289 HiPos, were 5-bolt bellhousings, built up to the end of the '64 model year (seemingly around August '64). The '65 model year 289s, inc. HiPos, were 6-bolt bellhousings. As far as I'm aware, slabside leafspring Cobras (MkIIs) were built up to and including late '64. This would imply that MkII Cobras were fitted with 5-bolt bellhousing 289 HiPos, and not 6-bolt. Does anybody know of a genuine, leafspring slabside street car that was originally fitted with a 6-bolt?

It is my belief that the 'CSX' 289 cars were 5 bolt as they were produced up to 1964 The AC 289 'COX' cars were produced later and could well have been 6 bolt. Dont know if you call a COX car a slabside tho.
The sixth bolt is so far round you cant see it anyhow, and trying to find a narrow pattern toploader may prove interesting.

According to a review of the original Shelby American shipping invoices, there were only 16 289 Cobras built with an automatic transmission. The transmission used was the special Hi Po C4 used in the 1965 Hi Po 289 automatic Fairlanes as the Hi Po 289 automatic was not available in Mustangs until the 1966 model year. This package also used a special designation manual choke Autolite carburetor that has a different part number (C4OF-AT or C4OF-BU) than the 4 speed carburetors or the 1966 Hi Po 289 automatic Mustangs. I own CSX 2580, which still has it's original serial numbered engine, and the engine is a 6 bolt Hi Po 289 whereas the 4 speed 289 Cobras used a 5 bolt Hi Po 289.
