Import costs

Post by Colin Newbold »

I'm trying to work out actual costings for importing from the US...

2 x Trigo 289 FIA rear wheels (9.5in) + tri-wing knocks offs and end caps. Cost = $1055
Shipping to my office = $203
(packed in two boxes, 32lbs per box)

Anybody know what amount of excise (import) duty this would attract?
And is there then VAT on top of the whole lot?
And does the process involve a delay (where the goods are held somewhere awaiting payment)?

Your help very much appreciated...

(and yes, the insurance co have paid up and Brooklands are starting work repairing COB81E tomorrow :D )

oh! and another thing...anyone know how the rules would work if, as an alternative, I get the boxes sent to my daughter either at her home in New Jersey, or her workplace in New York (freight cost drops to $50) and she then gets them sent to me, declaring each one as a gift? Does that avoid duty and VAT?

Well Colin, I can only tell you my story.
Bought from Trigo in March 2008 two FIA front and two rear, cost was 1200 $, shipping was 270$, on top of that 42.85 € customs and 188.69 € Import VAT.
All delivered to the house. I think i did get a good deal.

On a second look: 9,5 for your car? Are you extending the rear wheel arches? I had to machine my wheels by 1/2 inch to bring the wheel to sit inside the FIA bodywork. Didn`t you have splines? Is Trigo doing FIA with splines now? Well, I still have my 2008 knowledge, did not keep up with that because I have what I need.

Thanks Karl, really useful.

I'm converting the rear hubs to peg drive, and the new body will have Sebring-style rear arches to cover the tyres.

Hi Colin,
I think the "Gift" loophole has been closed for sometime now.
Cheers, Clive.

(If I'm not here I'm in my workshop or on the golf course!)

Colin,
Think it is about 4% import duty then 20% VAT on total including shipping.
Maybe best to call HMRC to get actual import duty rate for wheels/car parts. VAT is a definite though as they are coming from outside EU?

Thanks Andy, I'll check out the HMRC website as you suggest.

Seems you're right Clive. Spoke to my daughter, she seems to think that anything above about $50 declared value attracts the excise duty, gift or no gift.
