Mallory woes and advice ignored

Post by Wynterburne »

Well, you asked for some topics!!

I know I should listen to advice but last year ignored it. The Mallory twin point distributor in my 289 failed last year with condenser trouble ( I wrote an article in the mag about it ).

Well, guess what, it failed again at the weekend on a lovely sunny trip to deepest Hampshire. But now I carry a spare condenser so Karen sat quietly by while I swapped it over (Karen doesn't work the spanners yet).

So 1 year later it is about to have a Pertronix electronic system fitted which was the advice I ignored initially.

It did not spoil the trip mind, I got loads of Brownie points for being able to fix the car!!!

All wisdom says the Mallory condensers are rubbish, the local classic Jag specialist fit three fast swap ones to each race car (they use them as the rule book requires it).

Off to the VSCC Silverstone on Saturday but probably by BMW. Good event if you are looking for something to do.

Regards

Richard

I'd suggest a change of distributor - Pertronix are not totally problem-free.
I run a Mallory Unilite in my Cobra, and a Mallory magnetic in my Mustang. The Mustang's a bit recent, but the Cobra's done around 6,000 now and never missed a beat.

I also use the Mallory set-up as recommended by Peter Knight of Knight Racing Services ( http://www.knightracingservices.co.uk ) and it has proved to be an excellent piece of kit with no troubles whatsoever and great cold starting.
Cheers, Clive.

(If I'm not here I'm in my workshop or on the golf course!)

I think I'd have to sell the Hawk to buy the new Mallory! Sadly I have to exist on crumbs from the Finance Departments holiday leftovers.

Mind you, I have got agreement to a holiday in France this year with the Cobra - and of course Karen!!!

Well, the mech advance Unilite for a 289 isn't that bad -

- which at today's rate is only around £120...

(that's assuming you have a flat tappet cam, not a roller).
