Carcoon Standing Up Well

Post by Colin Newbold »

Hey guys,

Its been 9 months now since the Carcoon went live, with its built-in battery conditioner. This is the rigid frame version which makes entrance/exit easier.

Time for a review I feel.

Since installing I've added a dehumidifier, and as autumn set in, a greenhouse tube heater. I'm delighted to report the car has no more rust on it that when it went in the Carcoon for the first time and I don't even need to cover it up...there is no visible dust on it between uses. The only one drawback has been some issues with the zip on the entrance/exit, but as there are two zip handles, I simply go the other way with the second one. Thoroughly recommended.

BTW, no tittering on the state of the rest of my garage...that's due for de-cluttering very soon

Interesting. No comment on the garage, I doubt many of us have room to comment anyway...
Colin, I'd be interested to know what advantage you are getting from using this - is the garage damp? I'm interested to know, as I just have my cars parked in the garage with a dehumidifier running, and occasionally an elasticated cover to protect against dust. Then I put one on the cars, ho ho. The Mini has to live 'under the house', which is open at the sides, and I sometimes think of using a cover for that but I don't think the Carcoon is tough enough for outdoors and windy conditions - or is it?

Hi Roger,

My garage was damp for two reasons: a slight leak from the roof and a (boarded-over) pit that constantly had a layer of water at the bottom. Mine is an indoor Carcoon and has a water-repellent skin which has so far worked really well. Obviously, under the car (which is a seamless transition from the bubble above) the Carcoon keeps a water-resistant membrane between the car and the pit. As you can see, it has worked a treat.

When Steve Gray was repairing the rear end of the car last year he had all of the rear body off and we were both amazed at how much surface rust was on the chassis. We cleaned up what we could easily reach and repainted everything, using suitable quantities of Dinitrol in the rebuilding process. I realised it was time to take action as I didn't want the freshly rebuilt car coming home to a damp garage. The Carcoon was cheaper than a new garage roof so was a no-brainer.

While mine isn't suitable for exterior use, Carcoon do make one. It would work fine for the Mini. Check it out here: http://www.carcoon.com/carcoon-double-skin-outdoor.

Please note that other vehicle storage solutions do exist.

Cheers,
Colin

Ah yes, I'd forgotten you had the watery pit beneath the car, not a good idea.
Thanks for the Carcoon link. That may be an option, but the biggest issue would be that the Mini sits in front of the garage and has to be moved every time I want to move either Mustang or Cobra. Decisions, decisions...

Which is probably not very often during the weeks you'd want the Carcoon in place!

Thanks for that. I'm thinking of one for my ally 427 once it arrives. Since it'll be bare aluminium this will help dry it off post runs

You might want to wipe it first! Mine left blotches on the bare ally if I didn't wipe it down first.

Agreed. Don't put it away wet, or you'll have a blotchy car when you next get it out. It's not too bad on polished aluminium because they wipe off with a bit of elbow grease, but I'm pretty sure it won't be quite so easy on a brushed finish.

I always dry mine off before putting it away and I run a dehumidifier in the garage 24x7.

Actually, same with a painted one - ditto dehumidifier, 24/7.

What, you want me to take care of this thing once it finally arrives? Pah!

:D

Yep, I'll be wiping her down and reading her a bedtime story. It's the longest I've ever had to wait for a car so she'll be loved
