Shelby 289

Post by Tapped »

Hi all

Do people know this car? It looks really odd to me but it might just be the wheels, headrests and strange number plates...

Says it's the first alloy continuation car?

Cheers

Looks like a cheap and wrong dimensioned die cast model to me. Wrong body shell shape and doors are wrong etc. Rims look like wheel caps.

That looks really odd and most of the description is utter rubbish. "...chassis registered in 1965..." Shelby tried that one with his "original" 427 S/C Cobras and nearly ended up in jail. "..the very first aluminium finish Cobra....", I really doubt that.

However, it is the first off-road Cobra I've seen, which can be the only explanation for the ridiculous ride height.

Yes, that was a one-off which Shelby built in his money-no-object attempt to blitz the Exeter trial in 1964. He was furious that Dellow had refused to sell out to him, so be built this to take them on.

He lost, covered in muddy embarrassment.

It's all kinds of wrong isn't it? Interior door handles are bizarre too!

With my serious Cobra hat on, I really don't know where to start with this one.
Inner wheelarches?
Door trims?
Carburation?
front overrider (and presumably, therefore, grille aperture) angle?
Christ knows what the suspension setup is.
The list goes ever on

I remember first seeing mention of this many years ago, and thinking they must have described the shape to the builder over the phone, and this was his best guess at Cobra-shaped. Shame, as the actual metalwork looks first-class!

The wheels look like 18" with the outer 11/2" of the rims painted black!

[edit]Ha... Just found THIS! Check out the story.

I think this on CLUBCOBRA may have been the first time I saw CSX8001.

The CSX8000 series was much, much later than '64 Roger.

OK, he planned it in '64 and didn't get around to building it for a bit.

Probably found some chassis numbers hidden in a tree stump at Simms.
