Registration advice

Post by Marsh »

Dear all,

As my IVA approaches, I turn my thoughts to allocating my registration number to the car.

I have purchased an age appropriate plate for the car from a registration number specialist and I now a a retention document in my possession.

Obviously, as the car goes goes through the IVA process, I would like to allocate that number to the car as it's first registration number, rather than get a new one allocated by DVLA and then have to waste time then transferring my number onto the car.

Does anyone on the forum has personal experience of this exact scenario and can guide me through it?

Look forward to hearing from you!

Things are different now. In the good old days you used to go to your local DVLA office to register your car and you could transfer a retained registration there and then, as you have already paid the transfer fee when you get the cherished registration. Now it takes much longer as all the documentation needs to be sent to Swansea. As I understand it when your car is registered, if it has an age related registration, you will be allocated an un-issued number for the date and place of registration and then you will need to do the transfer. This is because you might want to retain the number at a later date so the vehicle will have it's original number re-assigned to the car.We bought a second hand car a couple of months ago and it took the best part of a month to have a number transferred, but when I bought a brand new car several years ago it was done in days.

My advice would be to phone Swansea and ask if the cherished number can be transferred at the same time as it is registered if you include the retention document with the original paperwork.
Cheers, Clive.

They won't allow you to use a number newer than the donor car, but in your case that won't be an issue.

I submitted my 'cherished' number retention document at the time of wanting the registration and so it was done in one go. I do appreciate as others have said that the system has most likely changed over the years and I can see the wisdom of DVLA allocating a number applicable to your car first before the cherished one.
You can only hope of getting it done in one operation.
