Easter Project

Post by StewbieC »

Got my Easter project sorted.
Installing a bubble hard top to my 289, with a roll bar. As I've taken Lynn Parks El Cid as inspiration (as I've got to fit a bubble within the bubble top) I've christened it "El Stu". I got in touch with Lynn and he kindly sent me some pics (jolly decent chap). The wonders of Facebook.
Gerry says it's not easy as the windscreen might not have the right rake, the lift a dots will probably be in the way as will the fuel cap and the side screens probably won't fit either. I like a challenge......

I have a 289 hardtop for modding and fitting to my Crendon at some point post-IVA. The roll bar also fouls the rear. Be very interested to see any pics and updates.

Stewbie, out of interest will this start as a Le Mans style hardtop or a short version (finishing at the same point as the soft hood). If the fuel filler is getting in the way I assume it is a short version.

Certainly Gerry has mentioned to me before that the screen should be angled more for a hardtop. With the Le Mans version I think this makes it look better and more streamlined. Not sure if it also applies to a short version hardtop.
Changing the screen angle will of course affect the hood and side screens.

Photos of Modsports cars from Nige’s article indicate that they had the short version hardtops.

Kevin, I think your Crendon roll bar brace goes to the rear as per 427’s but 289’s have their brace running forwards into the passenger footwell.

Peter - you are correct. When offered up the rear brace and top of roll bar fouls the Hawk bubble top that I have. I could add a teardrop Gurney bubble to get over the top part, but still pondering about the rear brace.

Hi All, I am doing the same thing with a Hawk bubble....I cut a relatively small hole for the roll bar to fit. I will add some form of vent to stop the rain coming in but still let the air out! She is away getting painted right now but will share some photos once done. I also need to cut the hole in the rear window to allow access to the filler.....I made the side windows to fit the hard top as I won't have a soft top.
Good luck with the Easter project! John

I've got the top sat down and the roll hoop just fouls on the area at the top of the rear screen so an EL Cid bubble will be spot on.
Screen rake was spot on and filler cap doesn't foul.

Yes Pete it's a short roof.

Will be mostly fettling an ally bubble this weekend.

Started forming John, but these things take time without an English wheel or planishing hammer.
Will post some pics of progress as it takes shape.
