Re: whats the favourite engine for a 289
Not a good question to ask on a Cobra forum.
All personal preference. Originals had Ford engines (289), 302's are very similar.
There are justifications for Fords and Rovers, all of which are valid.
I know of Rover engines being replaced with Fords but not personally heard of any Fords being replaced by Rovers.

the only possible engine for a 289 is a 289 Ford engine.
To have the correct one it should be a five bolt engine. block codes are starting with C2, C3 or C4
The heads should be cast iron, no roller cams or roller rockers

I have a Rover but if I were to start again it would definitely be a 289 Ford.
I wouldn’t necessarily go to the bother of the 5 bolt unit especially as they are as rare as hens teeth.
I think I would need a divorce before I change my engine to a Ford. E.g yes I want it but the management can’t see the benefit of the expense.
So I comfort myself knowing that my car has 80kgs less on the front axle.

i have a TVR 4,3 liter with tremac T5 gearbox. enough power, nice sound, easy to repair, enough parts aviable, no CO2 adjustment problems with the german TUV ( Ford engines do). Low weight. This is the engine i like, but everyone has itx own opinion, and thats good.

I have been very pleased with my 4.6 Rover with around 270 BHP which would be close to the original cars power. I didn’t think I would say it but after nearly 20 years I now feel that a tad more power would be useful.
