If I recall correctly, the end of classic vehicles and performance vehicles new and old was widely forecast when lead was removed from petrol.
There are a number of reason why I don't think we'll see the end of affordable petrol anytime soon. Firstly, there is nowhere near enough electricity generation capacity in the UK to power the widespread use of electric cars. The situation isn't any better on the continent either, so we can't just import it to fill the shortfall.
Whilst oil companies will claim that profit margins on the forecourt are tiny, they design it to be that way by moving costs around throughout the entire production process. Also, exploration generally takes place outside the UK, so profits can easily be moved offshore.
The oil companies are amongst the richest in the world, they're not simply going to roll over and cease to exist.
I accept that there may be some challenges ahead, but I have every confidence that we'll be able to drive our cars for as long as we want to.
