Video of what happens inside a diff

This is quite interesting - a transparent cover on the diff in this video allows you to see how the oil gets to the places it is needed:

I admit I didn’t appreciate the importance of the channel in the roof of the diff casing to get oil to the nose bearing but it makes sense.
Having worked on the design of lathe headstocks many years ago the oiling system was extremely crude. It relied on a metal plate attached to one of the shafts that would flip the oil laying in the base of the casting to the top of the headstock to then fall into an oil tray. The oil was then piped out to the respective bearings and gears. Life expentancy of these headstocks was around 25 years of constant factory floor use.
The simple designs are often the most reliable.

I'm making a mental note to take you along with me when I (one day) go and purchase a second-hand Boxford or Myford!
