Men's Shed

Post by amulheirn »

Hi all -

Totally not car-related, but I guess that's what the Lounge is for - I wondered if I can ask for your help?

I'm on the committee of a Men's Shed that we started up last year. If you've not heard of this concept, a Men's Shed is a place where people (not just men) can get together and work on projects - learning skills and gaining friendships in the process. Although it is a place for projects, the happy side-effect of it is social inclusion and a reduction in loneliness. Our members make or repair things for local good causes and get a lot of fun out of it. One of the things we've been working on recently are 'silent soldiers' in preparation for the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War:

We currently work out of a school DT room, but have plans to build our own shed so that the members can attend outside of school opening hours. Here's what we want to build - it is going to be 15 metres long and fully insulated so our members can use it all year round:

We've got planning permission and land - we need about £30K to build it, and have raised about £7k so far. So we're trying to raise money via various grants, one of which is the Aviva Community Fund.

Would you do me a favour and vote for our cause? We have just under 4,000 votes, but others in our category have 11,000. So we have quite a way to go to get in the top bracket. You can cast up to 10 votes for any cause you like the sound of. Voting closes on the 20th November. Click below to register and vote:

And if anyone has any bright ideas for sponsorship, grants or help, I would be really happy to hear from you. Please contact me by PM and I will give you my private email address.

Kind regards,
Andy
