Dipping headlights

Post by peterc »

We take for granted the ability to change from high level main beam to a dip beam. But the ability to dip a car’s headlight was not invented until 1915. To perform this operation you had to stop the car to re set the headlights. It was not until 1917 that Cadillac provided a lever system inside the car. Twin filament bulbs came along in mid 1920’s.
Cars supplied to the USA were not allowed to have replaceable bulbs until around 1974 which is why the sealed beam headlight was used for so long.
So that suggests that USA Cobras could not have had the tripod headlight back in the ‘60’s.
