GTD GT40 restoration

Post by simonjrwinter »

Not sure if it's of any interest to the viewers of this site, but I am starting the restoration of a GTD GT40 that I used to own in 2004. I bought it from the original owner/builder (it was built and registered in 1990) but sold it the next year to a French chap. He owned it for a while then sold it to someone in Luxembourg. This fellow tried (unsuccessfully) to register it and when he couldn't, it sat outside under a tarpaulin for the next 14 years until I bought it back last October.
Needless to say, it needs a complete and thorough restoration which I am documenting here... https://www.instagram.com/gtd_gt40/
Not a full and complete build log as such, just some pictures I'm taking along the way.
Incidentally, start at the bottom of the pictures and work your way to the top where the most recent entries are.

What happened to the front wing when it was in mainland Europe?
Anyway, interesting stuff.

I crashed it in 2004, repaired it with a new front clip before I sold it.

What is the photo of - third one down on LH side?
Looks like concrete? Surely not part of the car.

Gravel. It’s in the front clip tipped forwards, just not cleaned out after track days by a previous owner it seems!

I can see the loose gravel but what is the main grey part. Is that some foam filler or something.
You certainly have got some work to do.
Best of luck.

If we’re both looking at the same picture, that’s the garage floor……

Nah, that doesn't make sense as there is a bracket bolted down to the grey surface next to a thin blue line ( running vertically ) which would be the edge of bodywork. Darker grey on RH side of photo will be the floor.
General background is beige probably due to a layer of board or something.
Just intrigued.
Thought it might be some ones idea of extra crash protection??
Anyway don't waste time on my query you have a lot to do.

It’s the inside of the lowest part of the front clip (glassfibre painted black) bracket is numberplate support.
