Tech Talk 5 - Thursday 1st September

Post by amulheirn »

Note: This has been rescheduled from the 25th Aug to 1st Sept.

After a few months interlude (while I've been trying to get my build on), this follows on from the fourth Tech Talk, call number 5 is on Thursday 1st September at 8pm. It is for is for people building cars, thinking about building one, modifying a car or just generally interested. The idea is to share knowledge and get encouragement from fellow car builders. Please feel free to join!

Proposed Agenda:

  1. Wiki area for tips and stuff not in the manuals (Andy)
  2. Round-table - what are you building, or what progress since the last call (All)
  3. Technical problems (All)

The call will be on Skype, which you can get for computers, phones and tablets here.
I recommend three things:

  • A headset is a good idea
  • A headset with a microphone is an even better idea
  • A webcam is worthwhile, especially if you want to see what someone is showing via 'screen sharing'
  • Having photos of what you're talking about is very helpful

Once again - headsets are advisable - just one participant with feedback or background noise can make the audio bad for everyone. Contact me if you need advice on any of this. My email is wiki@the289register.com.

If you have pictures you want to share, you will be able to use the 'Share Screen' function in Skype to share them with the people in the call.

If you wish to be on this call, please send me your Skype ID, either by replying to this post, or directly via private message.

Minutes:

Just two of us on the call this time - John H and myself.

Most of the discussion was about progress, and repeating work that has already been done once or twice before. John provided some very useful photos of the fuel pump and line.

Some discussion was had about the IVA form and how best to fill it out. If anyone reading this has a copy of one they have used successfully, we would really appreciate seeing a copy. Even better, if it can be redacted and used on the Wiki (http://wiki.the289register.com) that would be great.

John has been liaising with Speedycables to try to get a connection between gearbox and speedo, with limited success. The gearbox is a T5 world-class, and the speedo is a Stewart Warner. For some reason, this combination seems alien to them, so he has had no success yet, but is still working on it.

Andrew has rebuilt his Ford 302 with new RHS heads and Comp Cams Magnum roller rockers. He almost installed a Magnum cam but piston to valve clearance was too small. Cutting valve reliefs in the piston crowns would've been a lot of bother, especially after the entire rotating assembly had been balanced, so the decision was made to re-install the original stock cam.

Next meeting will be on Thursday 6th October.
