Exhausts

Post by agnoraan »

What silencers do you guys use with underslung exhausts, to get the sound down to IVA acceptance levels? Photos of your exhaust systems would be good too if you have any
Thanks in advance....Nige

This is my system for Ford 302 with Jag rear axle. Supplied by Gerry for the SVA test which if I recollect was a higher noise level than the current IVA.

Have the same system as Clive and passed IVA no problem.
Got a few spare bits too, but don't have any headers.

I too have Gerry's system, for a 302, which I believe uses 4 MGB silencers. I was told by the IVA examiner last July it was "well within" the level test. It is actually fairly civilised...

Gerry's original exhaust only had the front box. The rear one was added to meet with the noise limits of the SVA. My intention was to remove the rear box and replace it with a straight pipe but on talking to Gerry he said there wasn't a significant change in the noise output. I do think the view of the rear boxes does look good from behind.
Cheers, Clive.

Nige,
My system started life looking just like Clive's and Alan's as again it was supplied by Gerry.
After a few years of scraping the pipes under the axle I modified it to raise it up closer to the floor and found a route up over the Jag rear.
You can view the details already logged with the club's web site - go to our web front page and click on technical articles section - exhausts.

Only comment is that I felt that the system was noisier after the mod but that may have been caused by the silencer contents getting damaged when cutting them out and welding back into the new route.

Thanks for all the replies and photos, it's a great help. Looks like it'll be MGB silencers then  Any idea of the bore sizes for inlet and outlet, is it 2"?

Thanks ...Nige

My(Rover) headers are 2 1/4", but out of the silencer box is 2"! ( I know the box for sidepipes isn't relevant to rear exit...just sayin').
