Oil Temperature Sender Location

Post by JohnO »

I'm restarting my build of a Hawk 289 FIA (302 engine).

Assuming the best place for a mechanical Oil Temp sender is in the sump, can anyone recommend where would be the best place to weld a nut into the sump? My plug is on the underside and I don't really want to have the thing sticking down from there.

Cheers,
John

Offside of the sump towards the bottom.

Yes, to the offside as there is more space( no starter motor) but I suggest halfway up the oil level. E.g work out where the top of the oil level is and make sure the sender is sufficiently below the top.

Mine is an electrical sender located at the back of the sump. It isn't welded but I have an adaptor which required a hole to be drilled and the adaptor pushed through and a nut fitted on the inside of the sump to hold it in place. The sender then simply threads in to the adaptor.

Originals had the capillary sender boss at the bottom of the rear facing section on the RHS.

Many thanks guys. I'd forgotten how helpful you all are - really appreciate it. I'll look into just using a hole and a nut on the inside of the sump.

Cheers,

I wish I could remember where I got mine from. I think it could have been Speedy Cables.

Hi John, I decided to use Stewart Warner capillary gauge and will connect it at the remote oil filter as part of the oil cooling circuit, so not into the sump at all. Not original as Roger states but is very accessible and the capillary can be looked after well away from the road. I have not done that yet as my car is just on the road and I am waiting on the initial oil change before connecting in the cooling circuit. A winter job along with building the correct dash to replace current IVA bodge!
