Spare tyre choice

Post by IainS »

Hi, it's March and I'm looking forward to getting out in the car again and planning some longer runs, I've only done 600 miles in total. I am running Avon CR6ZZ's which I'm sure folk here know don't fit in the Hawk spare wheel tub, Gerry told me this before I bought them. So I need recommendations on 205/70/15 tyres that are relatively inexpensive and will fit in the tub. I know the diff and/or steering will object a little but I can't image that is a major problem for a spare, not sure I have a choice anyway?

Any suggestions gratefully received.

I have an MGB wheel, and ([un]fortunately) no LSD, meaning that the different circumference isn’t a problem on the back, at least it handled the 130 miles to Silverstone okay!
(Plus I have lefty & righty MG spinners too)

I didn't think of that, have binned 5 MGB wheels from my donor!

If I could put my question another way...what tyres are people using that do fit in the spare wheel tub?

An 'absent friend' informs me that Avon CR6ZZ 205/70/15 will fit when slightly deflated, just keep a footpump with you too!

My spare is a Pirelli 206 x 60 x 15 on an MGB wire wheel.
Yes, needs to be considered more of a space saver when running larger alloys on an FIA.
I am sure many people don’t have a spare and just carry a can of gunge. Saves quite a bit of weight - 15+ kgs.

Thanks guys, this makes sense. Gerry said the Avons don't fit in the spare wheel tub but I didn't realise finding wheel/tyre combos would be this difficult. I think the MGB rims are 14", which is why I binned them...

I think my MGB spare is 185/70/15, but don’t take that as gospel!

Is there any provision for a spare to be provided for IVA? I couldn't see one in the rules.
