MGB front Kingpin

Post by simonjrwinter »

Took the wheels off my car yesterday and quite by accident found out that the stub axles both have up and down free play (1/8 inch or so) on the kingpins. I don’t think that the fact I have tubular front suspension has any relevance here does it?
Anyway, I know nothing about the MGB front suspension, I presume I don’t just tighten the nut on top to take out the slack? I’ve not tried anything yet.....

Andy Mulheirn is your man.
It's a DIY job or you can buy exchange uprights from most MGB parts suppliers including MGB Hive and MIdlands sports and classics.

I think (could be wrong) the uprights May be new. Having done some google searching, I think it may be a shim error when the suspension was assembled.

If it is the shims on the stub axle then I am glad you found the error prior to taking it out for a spin.
Andy Mulheirn has done a You tube video on this and also there is one by University Motors, John Twist on MGB front bearings which is good too.

I’ve ordered new front uprights and stub axles so will pay particular attention to the wheel bearings upon reassembly.
