Thanks Peter, your explanation of cause could be spot on, although after a couple of miles from leaving home on Friday I clearly heard it running on less than 8 cylinders...I drove like this for a couple of miles until I could find a safe spot to pull off and investiagte and there was a plug lead off the dizzie cap...so this could have been the cause of the eventual demise of the electrics. That written, the fan belt had been screeching on and off for the whole journey.
Luckily I found a correct-sized fan belt at home in the garage and fitted it. Tonight I will try your test method of the alternator pully...as the drive is clockwise I will try turning it that way.
