Drivetrain noise

Post by simonjrwinter »

Right, Hawk FIA, 302, T5, MGB rear axle, side pipes.
The car has done 420 miles from new (although 10 yrs old)
I’m getting a drivetrain noise that is worse on moderate acceleration but I’ve realised I can still hear it at tickover.
I thought originally it was axle related but that’s been taken out, checked and refitted and it’s still there. As far as I can tell, the axle/prop shaft isn’t rubbing on anything. The prop isn’t rubbing on the bodywork where it goes through the tunnel. I’m now leaning towards gearbox issues. I’m going to remove the tunnel next and drive the car to see if I can locate the noise. Any ideas?

Clutch release bearing? Does the noise go away when you depress the clutch pedal slightly?
Cheers, Clive.

Hi Clive,
No it doesn’t. I can sit also with the clutch depressed and run it through all the gears also. No increase/decrease in the noise. I’m going to check the exhausts as well tomorrow.

are you sure it's drivetrain, especially if there on tickover presumably out of gear? is it speed related if you freewheel car? or could it be water pump or belts given limited usage? belts can be quietened temporarily by dose of talcolm powder as a test

bets of luck Stuart

Certainly doesn’t seem to be coming from the front of the car nor be engine related. It’s in/ under the cockpit/ rear area. No carpets so whatever it is is certainly being amplified.

Could you describe the noise? A hum, a rumble, a squeek, a drone, a knock? Does it increase with road speed or engine speed or when cornering?

I’m going to go out in the car today with a GoPro. Will post a link when I’ve uploaded it.

Is the noise high pitched?
I had a horrible screechy noise that was intermittent, but steadily getting worse.I worried about drive train, clutch, alt belt slipping etc.
Turned out it was a loose bolt on the headers/sidepipe fixing - easy fix.
