I’ve read somewhere that expanding foam should be used to fill the door cavities and wooden “fillers” that need to be made up for under the doors.
I can’t remember where I read about it. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Build blog?
Also any advice?
Thanks
Simon

Re: Expanding foam and trim
Hi Simon, I was told to only put enough filler foam in the door to fill between the impact bar and the door skin to prevent drumming. If you put too much in it can soften the fibreglass.
Cheers, Clive.

Hi Simon,
My blog touches on it, part 28. Home page, Building and Servicing, Building a Hawk 289 Stuart Clarke, Part 28 IVA.
As Clive says, you only need to form contact between the outer skin and brace within the cavity to stop the drumming. Some decent blobs do it. I used Hardboard to fill the hole in the door and also to form a flat face for the aperture around the door, although you can use aluminium for that.

Gents,
Gerry's manual suggests filling the doors and around the door opening to allow the door to shut with a clunk rather than a clatter.
just to check, has that advice now changed?

Re: Expanding foam and trim
There's fill and overfill.
Gerry's advice worked for me and is a cheap and viable solution although there are other interpretations.
Dynamat is an option and the prior suggestion of damping between the outer skin and cross brace is most critical to reduce drumming.

I have seen quite a few original 289s, and as far as I recall, the doors did not shut with a "clunk".
Cheers, Clive.

Made a start today...
Put some dynamat type stuff on the door panel, a few squirts of expanding foam between the bars and the outer skin, then a small amount behind the aluminium panel.
