SW Gauge bezels

Post by simonjrwinter »

Has anybody ever replaced these?
I’ve got a full set of instruments with bezels in poor condition but they are crimped/rolled on. According to Stewart Warner themselves, the only fix is new instruments! That’s just crazy and very poor design. Why they can’t be bayonet or “bend the tab” designs I don’t know!
Any suggestions?

Get in contact with Chris Schlaff.
I'm sure he can help as he's restoring instruments.

To contact him best search for "chris1932" on ebay

He’s US based isn’t he?
At £58 postage per bezel (£52 each) it’d be cheaper to replace all the instruments!

Simon,

SW gauges are a bit difficult. They have the edge complete crimped. Smiths are easy, only 3 or 4 small straps.

You can carefully "open" the crimped edge with a screwdriver, just one mm and so on till you have rised the whole bezel edge. After you have cleaned up everything and replaced the new bezel, just do the opposite. Every one or two mm bend the edge bachwards. A lot of pushes and it is not as perfect when done at the factory. But because it's the backside of the bezel, it can't be seen. I have used a brand new 8000 SW Mustang speedo to mount a Smiths Chronometric dial in.

Or a new electr. SW speedo to mount a vintage green line dial in.

It can be done. Have it done a few times over the years.
