Hmmm... nice XJ40 there for restoration. Quite fancy that, if I had space.

Perhaps Insaneron should consider this as at least it has a log book to be able to start the registration process. You would need to register the engine number with the log book first to make it owned by the donor.

I think that now requires an inspection or at least a letter of confirmation from a mechanic.

Inspection? Do they still do those, and if so, how?

In 1999 I had to take mine to the Wimbledon tax office for inspection. Rather a rudimentary check and only ensuring that the chassis and engine numbers corresponded with the application form. I am sure that get are far more thorough now.

Well, yes, I've had to take at least ten cars to local offices for inspections since then - my point was that the local offices have all gone and I'm not aware of any 'mobile' inspectorate. Is there any facility to do inspections now everything has changed?

I didn't mean a DVLA inspection but by an engineer/ mechanic who would confirm the change of engine. The loophole whereby you could effectively change an engine to your donor car on paper was closed before the offices were.

Like Roger I have wondered if there are any DVLA inspections to confirm the paperwork.

Really? I've done a couple of engine changes on paper successfully in the last month...
