289FIA for sale at auction

Post by peterc »

Interesting to look at Oldtimer Galerie and see that there is a 289FIA coming up for auction on 11th June. It's based on the Coventry Motors competition car as driven by a certain messers Allen Grant
It's only a replica but they anticipate a selling price around £102,000 to £109,000.
Whilst it's a nice looking example I note it hasn't got proper center lock wheels and they have got carried away with engine size going out to 5.6 L.
My German is not too good so I don't know whose kit it started as but I note it doesn't have leaf springs for the front suspension.

Hi Peter, it is a Kirkham body mounted on a HS frame. HS is a swiss company and did build Cobras with their own frame and RAM bodys. They stopped building some years ago as they could not register the cars on the swiss market any more. They claim that the car has UK registration, so they try to sell it in the UK.

That was the first Coventry Motors lookalike in Europe I think. Aluminium and Ford engine but compared with the yellow one in 1963 not very "original" made. Many "wrong" modifications or no modifications at all compared to # 96 from 1963.

Migge, the guy with the GRP body :-)

Beside German and French, here is the English text:

V8, 5‘686 cc, about 400 hp. An excellent replica of the Coventry Motors Race Cobra driven by Allen Grant. Kirkham alloy body on a HS tubular frame with adjustable race suspension, Ford 347 cui V8 Stroker engine with 4 Weber dual carburettors and 5-speed transmission. A curb weight of only 880 kg with about 400 hp, new race clutch, ready to go. Really fast and brutal car in excellent condition.
UK registration, Swiss duty paid.

...Or you could ask €1.5M for a Darlington Daytona...don't mean it's worth that!

Would you place it's value higher than a Kirkham, or even a DB427?
