Seeing as how you asked Nik, how about set back, out of sight, where it can still protect the rad (race cars didn't have one of course). Or a Hawk grill where that one is?

I agree with Colin, either of those two options would be fine. But as he also points out, a race car, which is what yours looks like, wouldn't have one of course.

Of course some race cars had grills.
Mesh mounted in front of the bodywork using brackets that also carried auxiliary lighting for long distance races ( perhaps Le Mans)
Not very pretty but functional none the less.
