I don't believe the AC 289 Sports was ever an option from Dave, or anyone else for that matter.

Hi Alan,

In truth, for me personally, a 427 in 'Street trim was always going to be my ultimate iteration of the Cobra, as the lure of the bigger engine dates back to when I first bought the Super Profile book back in the early '80's.

That said, with the passing of time, age and supposed wisdom, who couldn't love an AC 289 Sports, on Surrey plates and looking like it just drove out of 1968?

Enough of the '4' word already!

Were there that many dealers in Surrey, Lee?

It's allowed in this section Roger.

Don't you know, Surrey was awash with AC dealers in the 60's. In all seriousness, were there any AC dealers in Surrey? I assume the factory didn't sell direct, so what is the likelihood of a "new" AC Cobra with a Guildford number plate?

There were a surprising number of dealers in Surrey who could supply your new AC - the 5 main ones being HW Motors in Walton on Thames, Guy Salmon in Thames Ditton, Car Consultants of Leatherhead, Jack Rose of Wallington and Victoria Motor Works of Godalming, but quite a few cars appeared to have been pre-registered before they were dispatched to other dealers nationwide.

The other predominant dealers originated in London - Len Street, HR Owen, Clayton Cars, Steel Griffiths and Co, Metcalf & Munday, Russell Motors Knightsbridge and Charles Follett all supplied AC's and also in Birmingham - Lincoln Street Motors, Frank Grounds Ltd, Hunts Garage and finally Williamsons Garages were all agents for AC in the mid 60's

It's Surrey all the way for me though as a Cobra without a 'P' in the plate is like having a period Jaguar that's not on a Coventry plate - sad I know.

Impressive knowledge Lee, but you really need to get out more.

BTW, I'm glad my Jaguar is on a Coventry plate. I wouldn't want to make that faux pas.

Must get a Dearborn plate for the Mustang... any idea what the letters would need to be, Lee? And for Spartanburg for the M Coupé - although the drivetrain was assembled in Munich... oh dear
