Replacement clutch for Hawk 289

Post by cmaclean »

Can anyone help me source a replacement clutch for a Hawk 289, 1997 build, Rover 3.9 SD1 engine? Gerry says he cannot help (his reconditioner passed away), Rimmer Brothers cannot help (out of stock), several other sources cannot help (not found on the system). Current pressure plate and cover plate have totally illegible numbers painted on them, and so far have bought two dud clutches based on well meaning assurances.

Existing pressure plate is 243mm diam, and takes a 23mm shaft with 23 groves, and has 6 embedded springs.
Existing cover plate is 243mm ext diam, and 152mm int diam. Its flange is 272mm diam.

I'm getting desperate, so all help appreciated.

Gerry says gearbox is "for sure" an LT77, but I have been all over it and found no numbers.

A V8 Discovery clutch should do the trick. How many splines does the plate have? I will call LUK tech team tomorrow and see if we can get you fixed up.

The early clutches for the V8 were called "non self centering" and later were called "self centering". Its best to fit the later type clutch kit that comes with a complete thrust bearing/carrier. You can replace the earlier type with the later type, but you must use the later complete thrust bearing and carrier. If you don't you'll have problems engaging gears. When enquiring for a replacement, ask for a late model Rover V8 SD1 clutch kit. The Rimmer Bros part number is RB7491. Paul.S

Out interest what year did the new self centering clutches get fitted. My engine / gear box was built early 1999.

Ok. This is tricky.

Problem is all the parts catalogues I have show this engine as 95-98. Does it have the serpentine belt?

How about this? It has the correct 9.5" 23 spline plate for the LT77 box. Both types of CRB are available.
