Got another hour on the car today, dropped the slave cyl off again, and the problem became visible:

Oh goody. The pivot post has punched through the clutch fork.

A bit of Googlage shows that this is not an uncommon problem, and that a recommended mod is to weld a plate across the fork at the pivot point, or even better, buy a ready-modded piece.

All new parts including uprated fork, £39 delivered from Rimmers. Not too painful! :|

A bit of a fiddly job if I recall from BT's gearbox.
Cheers, Clive.

Sorry to read 'bout your troubles Nick, what a pain.

I dont think we've got a section on the wiki for 'troubleshooting' have we? A single post with the best of your words and photos could help kick that off.

Guess who went for a drive in his Cobra tonight?! :D
  • Set Car on stands, front wheels 2" off the ground, rears just touching. *(we'll be back to that later!)
  • Remove seats, trans tunnel, propshaft, gear lever & reverse switch wires.
  • Disconnect fuel pipe, choke cable, slacken engine mounts, remove exhausts & gearbox mount nuts.
  • Jack engine & gearbox(2 jacks) to clear gearbox mount. Remove all bell housing bolts except the 2 at '10 & 2' o-clock

  • Fit 2 6" coachbolts to the holes at '11 & 1' o-clock( there isn't a 12 o-clock!), remove '10 & 2' bolts & withdraw gearbox from engine.
  • Lower Jack under gearbox & remove. Discover front wheels should have been 4" off the ground, and gearbox won't come out.(told you we'd be back to that!) Decide that rather than upset the engine angle, you'll work on it under car.

  • Remove destroyed clutch fork & thrust bearing. Clean bellhousing, degrease/regrease thrust bearing, refit with new clutch fork, slippers & rod retainer.

  • Jack gearbox back up & refit to engine, lower back into position. Fit slave cylinder, add fluid, bleed & test.
  • Go to bed...it's 3am!

Resuming after not enough sleep, Refitting is the reverse of removal. Finished exactly 24 hours after I started (and nearly 6 weeks into I started my 2-day detachment with work!)!!!
Test drive felt SOOO good, it's a beautiful, clear still night, and I just wanted to drive it forever.

There must be a time warp. It's only 01.51 in Scotland!

Firstly well done Nik and glad it’s all working OK.
You make it sound pretty easy and I’m sure it wasn’t. Did you manage to just change the normal angle of the engine by undoing the exhaust manifolds but keep the water hoses connected?

Not sure I understand why having the rear of the car higher would have helped. Sounds like you were hoping to post the gearbox downwards after undoing the last bolts. I assumed that there isn’t enough clearance around the bell housing for it to come up into the cockpit.
