Registration query

Post by simonjrwinter »

When presenting a car for registration. To get an age related plate, several parts are needed from the donor MGB. What if a Jaguar back axle and hawk tubular front suspension (with the uprated “hawk” brakes) are used?
Are there still enough donor parts in the car?
Thanks

Simon, as far as I know you still need minimum 8 points to get an age related plate. Of course it does depend on what was modified on your donor before your obtained it. I believe that there is another rule that allows mods before 1988 to be ignored but I personally wouldn’t use the Jag rear suspension at registration.
Remember that the DVLA are tightening up on these issues.

Thanks Peter, duly noted.
Has anyone on here presented their car with either or both of the above mods?
Gerry seems to think several have got through without a Q

Nothing to do with points Peter, 2 major components required from the donor vehicle. Steering rack and column count as one, normally rear axle or front suspension count as another.
You'll need to get your blagging hat on. It has been known to pass the MGB uprights as front axles (as they are) and it has been known to pass the tubular wishbone front suspension as being off an MGB (as they can be) but there is a risk involved and with these two it can be subjective.
If you can provide evidence by way of photos, the task is easier.
I had 3 bits and photos from when I took it off the MGB, no problem, no Q plate.
For info the tubular wishbone and IRS can be retrospectively fitted.
Tubular wishbone needs cutting to the chassis and a bit of none structural welding. IRS is expensive, awkward to fit, needs a different prop shaft and speedo calibration.

Stewbie,
Using the ‘kit conversion’ rules as apposed to ‘radically altered’ I agree. Just have to prove the major parts came off the donor when you have scrapped it.
I had PM’d Simon to that affect and suggested he contact you direct for clarification. I thought that mine went through on the points ruling but then they did offer an age related plate rather than the original before I used my cherished ’64 plate.

I'm just about to start my registration application, and from my reading, the car can go through with two major parts.

In the application process, you are supposed to provide evidence of 'type approval', which I believe means the IVA certificate. Can anyone who has registered recently confirm?

And does anyone have a completed form V627/1 they can send me a photo of? Or advise me on?

Cheers,
Andrew

Type approval is the MAC cert you got with the IVA pass as you suspected.
Don't have a copy of the completed form sorry.
I sent photos of stripping parts from the donor and on the Hawk and I didn't even have to have it checked. V5 came through the post a couple of weeks later.
