Hawk 289 FIA for sale

Post by simonjrwinter »

I bought this in January this year and was determined it would be a “keeper”. However, with difficulties selling the 289 “slab side” means that I am going to have to do the unthinkable and put the FIA up for sale as well (warning, don’t over-stretch yourself)
It’s a 289 FIA car, complete with Le Mans hard top. It’s fitted with a Ford 302 built by Real Steel, aluminium heads ets, fully balanced and dyno’d at 335 BHP. It’s a beautiful engine, smooth and while it’s only done 400 miles and still “running in” you can already feel it’s going to be a cracker. It has a Tremec 5 speed gearbox and fully rebuilt rear axle. At the front, Hawk tubular suspension and Wilwood brakes are fitted.
The car has knock-on FIA wheels.
After I bought the car, I started a series of improvements to it to bring it in line with my concept of a car I would want to keep.
I removed the hardtop (I’d never get in with it fitted anyway!) and raked the screen slightly less so I would see through the screen rather than over it (original “FIA” mounting holes still there) fitted glass windwings and plastic sun visors, fitted original style mirrors, fitted Cobra six bolt steering wheel and boss, tripod headlamps, LED “coffin” style rear lights, fitted Gerry’s lovely leather seats (with heating elements for both seats) and 5-point 3” Willians harnesses. The car also comes with, but not fitted, side screens and Perspex for windows, aluminium quick lifts.
The hardtop and fuel filler extension will be included in the sale should you want to put it back to the FIA screen angle (the wind wings then won’t fit......)
The car needs painting (SMS autospray, the Cobra specialists have quoted 3.5K), and carpets, to finish but otherwise complete. The car drives beautifully ( particularly now I’ve sorted the exhaust positioning!) and has had its first oil change.
I will be absolutely gutted if this sells first but if the other car goes first, I’ll be withdrawing this from sale.
Sensible offers via PM please

Simon, sorry to hear that you are considering the sale of the FIA car.
Perhaps you could take out a short term loan to tide you over the current financial dilemma and avoid the sale.
If the registration number is not included I think you need to advise the potential purchaser what the status is with the DVLA.
Is the car classed as historic. I assume from previous comments on the forum that it has been through IVA.

Yes, passed IVA about 10 yrs ago but virtually unused!
How do you mean advise what the status is?

Simon,
Sorry, not knowing it was IVA’d years ago I was wondering if it had been correctly registered as a Hawk yet and whether it was classed as Historic e.g. road tax free.
Would the DVLA issue another age related plate and if so what year?
I don’t assume anything these days especially as I have just been talking to a member of the CRC who has bought a Cobra replica which he doesn’t really know what it is. From a photo I think it is a BRA and it has apparently not been through SVA/IVA despite being built numerous years ago. He has not even seen the V5 yet but believes it says MGB!
I can only assume he will now have the uphill struggle to correctly register it and converting it to meet all the current requirements.

Yes it can be a nightmare and a right Royal PITA!
The FIA was IVA’d and correctly registered under the “age related” rules and originally on a 1971 “J” registration. I put on the dateless plate when I bought it. If it sells (and to be honest I’m kind of hoping it doesn’t) it will revert back to the original “J” registration and the new owner will be free to keep that, put a dateless plate on, or an earlier, 1960’s more period correct plate on (which always looks better to me)

:D Panic over. Now no longer for sale.
God I love driving this thing. It’s been quite a time since I’ve had a car that I just drive for the hell of it. Even a 30 min blast is a tremendous tonic.
