Once I’ve drained my engine oil, I can remove my damper and re-install it can’t I?

Re: Removing 302 damper
Feeling a little dim here - what's a damper in the context of engine oil? I only know of dampers in suspension systems.

Oh ok - a harmonic balancer...
Well from memory, my balancer (Ford 302) can be removed and re-installed without needing to do anything with engine oil.

Re: Removing 302 damper
Thats absolutely correct, those are two individual things...
The only thing is, that you should put some engine oil (assembly lube) on the crank shaft an the sealer ring before re-install the harmonic balancer.

Re: Removing 302 damper
Thanks gents I was under the impression the balancer was bathed in oil inside the engine. Seems I may have been wrong then….now just to work how to get the flaming thing off as there’s not enough room in front (chassis tube) to get a conventional puller in…..

Re: Removing 302 damper
A universal harmonic balancer removal kit did the job nicely, balancer removed, de-rusted, sprayed and ready to be re-installed…..

Looking good!
Depending on the age of the balancer, ensure that there is no wear or cracks on the rubber ring between the both parts.
Check also if - with the the applied color on the inner flange - this still will slip on the crank shaft, as this is normally a tight fit.

Re-installed (all the above checked) and started, runs perfectly (as it always does).
