Cortina based, could be a Pilgrim looking at the tank position etc.

I think you are correct. If you Google who used a Cortina as a donor car it brings up Pilgrim Sumo.
Please note it is registered as Ford Cortina!!!
In my opinion it will most likely need to go through the IVA test.
It should have been re registered correctly years ago. The DVLA did give a time period for incorrectly registered cars to have their log books corrected. E.g. there was plenty of Jaguar convertibles that were put on the road before the SVA test became a requirement.
It just means it will need a fair bit of work to become legal.

There were 2-3 other cars that used a cortina donor, but I'd be inclined to say Pilgrim Sumo Mk1 or SEV kit.

I thought the Sumo was a 427 kit , this looks more like a 289 and it does kind of say that. Maybe they did a 289

The SABTVR... VIN number was issued by the DVLA for re-shelled cars apparently
So it must be a Genuine Shelby Cobra( cos it has the plate) and it was re-shelled with a fibreglass body ...and full Cortina running gear including engine...wanting an emoji here

I stand corrected on the registration description being Ford Cobra not Cortina but still think it should read the name of the kit manufacturer and not Ford.
The grill shape and arches are 427.
They could have made a better attempt with the (easily purchased) Shelby plate it’s not even riveted on but has self tappers.
I think extra investigation would be needed ref it’s identity accuracy with the DVLA.
It would be an interesting quirk if it was eligible for free road tax and no MOT if it’s first MOT as a Cobra was 1998. That's the year I built mine and it required an SVA test.
It would be safer ref it’s purchase price to assume an IVA would be needed.

Stephen, I think you will find that AC sold Cobras around 1966/7 with a 427 shell but with a 289 engine and wire wheels and it was sold as an AC289 as opposed to the slightly smaller Mk2 289 which we tend to refer to being the slab side.

The early Sumos had very little 'dish' on the rears, and were comparatively narrow hipped, but def not a slab side.
That changed with the MkIII, which also coincided with the loss of the famous cortina door handles, although some cars had these filled in anyway.
The real giveaway on this car is the stick-on side vents, only ever seen on early Sumos. It also has Pilgrim Sumo-style demisters.
The grp floorpan in the cockpit area was only ever used on the MkI. So unless its a 'bitsa', I would say MkI Sumo, albeit with a lot of attention (concealed bonnet hinges, MWS Centre-lock wheels, door handles filled in), added to make it look nicer than many were back in the day.
