Rear Coil Overs Hawk 289

I'm building a Hawk 289 Le Mans and have been looking among the topics for a thread regarding coil overs. You guys who built Hawks:

what lenght of the shocks?:
what spring rate?:
what lenght of springs?:

have You used, what are your experiences?

Standard springs are 400 lbs, 8” length, 2.25” id
Gaz shocks can help with dimensions

Simon, thanks for reply!
Is the one ’n each of the four springs 400 lbs? That’s about 180kg + 180kg= 360kg each side, sounds much, not to stiff?

On my IRS, I started off with 4 x 400lb springs but have now settled on 4 x 500 lb springs!
The 400lb springs were too soft for me.

Aha! My friend has a Hawk 289 FIA with same IRS, the weight distribution is about 50/50 front-rear and it weighs aprox 1000kg. The corner weights are now equal to 250kg.

Are your figures about the same Simon?

Yes, obviously firmer than the 400lb springs (most people are happy with these) but still a good ride.

Hi, don’t forget that the coilovers units are mounted approx 10” along the rear arm, while the hubs are mounted at the end - approx 16” - so there’s roughly a 1.6:1 effort ratio onto the springs.
Also, when you add a ‘well-fed’ crew, a full tank, all the weather gear for car and crew AND bags for a 15-day European road trip, you’ll be glad you have good springs - ask me how I know… :D

You wouldn't get that amount of luggage into a Hawk!. The first three small bags maybe but not the two big ones. Obviously the advantage of a different make of car and no spare wheel.
