289 Headlamp Rim

Post by StuBaker »

Hawk 289 just back from the paint shop. An excellent job by Steve and Mick at SMS.
Reassembling now but headlamp rims I'd bought in the late 90's were two different types. Didn't notice at the time 'til it came to fitting. Does anyone know which one it should be? One is more spherical, the other more cylindrical.
Car builder solutions have similar, spherical advertised as 8.5, cylindrical one 8.0 inch.

Hi Stu,
Headlight rims are a minefield. The correct ones for the 289 Cobra are MGA Bullnose ones with the rivet at the top. Then comes quality. Decent ones are spun copper that are chromed. There are companies that still have original tooling but the required numbers are lacking so production runs are normally 1 run in 10 years. Most that are available normally will rust as you watch them.
SVC did have some nice ones but the current ones are pretty rubbish.
If anyone finds a decent supplier let me know as mine are a bit pitted. Unfortunately stainless ones don't look right.

If you have a decent base design is it not worth getting them re chromed?
I’m going to have to get my over ridders seen to soon as two are flaking.

The Wipac ref is S5445 if you can find them cheaper elsewhere.

Do these fit the PL700 light unit?

They fitted to my PL's.
I did have one set once that were too tight and SVC replaced them (back in the day when Steve was at the helm).

I've just fitted the SVC rims today, they look OK. No rivet at the top though! Ah, well, next time.
Just the dash left to do now, fingers crossed for Sunday start up.
Thanks for the help Stu,
Cheers,

Most Newly produced headlight rims don't have the rivet... Your only option if you want the rivet is to try and find some NOS lucas rims, Good luck with that!! i've been looking for around 3 years.. Rechroming old units will mean removal of the brass rivet..
